five more things

these five topics were brought to you by the incomparible [personal profile] innerbrat

1. fabric:
I love fabric, because it's such a sensuous and varied medium for an artist to work with, and it's one where you're encouraged to TOUCH it. Fabric is something that is always close to your skin. If you'd asked about denim, I would easily tell you that aside from being my most plentiful resource on hand, they're the most comfortable. There is nothing like some well-worn and well-washed denim for the soft texture of it. And I get quite the steady supply here, when people ruin their jeans, I'll get free denim if I debone them and sort the pieces into stuff for patches or full clothes. I'm a little scared to try things like fine silk, satin has been a challenge to work with as it is! I've not yet explored wool either, but it's still out of my current price range ATM. I'll be sewing my own kimonos out of whatever I can get my hands on, bedsheets, store cloth, muslin or denim. Maybe oneday, I'll afford silk, but probably not in this lifetime.

2. superhero narratives:
Either someone narrating a hero's story, or the hero themselves telling it. I vastly prefer the former, because in those stories, you get the little tidbits of their daily life edging into the storyline itself, the food, the people they love, the music they'll relax to. Sometimes though, you get a lot of voice when the heroes tell it themselves. And I'll freely admit that i love reading them for the escape from my own life, and that I as a wee biter of legs, sometimes dreamed of flying like some of them.

3. love:
This one topic I'm not even sure how to answer now, because it's become a complex thing for me. Physical love is still something that's simple for me, it's hugging those close to me, even if they're far away. Nothing goes below the waist these days, and I'm really happy about that. I'm by far more interested in platonic and intellectual loves than sexual ones. Then again I haven't done much exploring in this subject and it is something I should investigate...even just a little.

4. music:
Wide, weird and varied tastes. Music is something I need in my life, most of all when I'm doing art. It stimulates my senses, my emotions, my thoughts and actions. The only time I don't listen to music is generally when I'm sleeping. Music meant to put me to sleep just irritates me, and listening to music while I'm trying to sleep at home is just impossible. The only times I've fallen asleep to music are at a dead exhaustion while travelling. These days it's hard for me to find just the right kind of music to match a mood or a job I need to do. Techno works for bread and pasta making (don't ask me why!) but not for when I'm sewing. Celtic punk is great for sewing, but not for anything else. Straight up 90's music is what I exercise to, though the odd remix and mashup does join in.

5. smells:
I live with my senses, and surprisingly I spend a lot of time learning through scent. Not surprising i'm a cook, you need to know when your herbs, spices and sauces are cooking properly and having a sharp sense of smells helps immensely with that. It's also a bit of a hazard because some perfumes will literally give me a headache, especially if they're laid thickly. Part and parcel of why I got into BPAL and other fine perfumes was the fact that I couldn't find scents that I wanted to wear in public. And it's amazing how the human mind can be manipulated just with a simple scent here or there. Citrus to wake up and brighten; vanilla and resins to curl into bed; spices, resins and herbs to pray.

Five: Taken from [personal profile] bjornwilde

Comment to this post saying "FIVE!" and I will pick five things I would like you to talk about. They might make sense or be totally random.

Then post that list, with your commentary, to your journal. Other people can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself, hopefully for the rest of eternity!

(I don't really care if you say "FIVE" or let me know some other way. Just for the record.)

Here we go! )

selections from [personal profile] ellixis, keyworded CHIMERA

Keyword: Erba?
Black and white drawing, early self portrait cartoon-style looking off to my left, words 'driven to distraction' in crossword-style blocks on each side of the face.

This icon started out as my 'whazzat' icon back on LJ, because during the time I was drawing this icon, I wore both the be-buttoned black beanie of bugfuh??? and a black hoodie nearly every single day. I still have the hardest time keeping track of the things going around me and my own mental processes, so this icon has come to be the symbol of "I have missed something here", "Attention Defici- OH SHINY", frantic double-checking, and anxiety issues. I drew this. I am now not certain if I should switch this old relic out or not. Added bonus, a google search of the phrase has shown me that "Driven to Distraction" is the name of an ADD self-help book!

Keyword: Plush bug, stitchery
A purple plush bug with an embellished body made of nubby purple fleece, with 6 bright green legs and two yellow jaws stares into the camera from atop a blue car hood, reaching for the camera, bold lime-green text bordered in black reads "Skree..."

I actually made, own this plush and sold off most of the others of his clutch. His name is Thooly and he generally accompanies me into bed every night. Thooly was made roughly...heck 6 years ago, when my mother was still dating a jerk, who refused to pack enough bug repellant when we went up the mom's family cabin during the summer. Between the heat and the number of ticks I picked off of myself and his dog I was too freaked to sleep.

When we got back because I went back to making toys and realized that I was still so danged freaked and still looking for ticks. So I thought let's just make something of this and be DONE with it. So with the remains of a few old purple fleecy sweatshirts, and some calico and buttons I made the first teeky bug, Thooly. The rest soon followed after and have now gone to other homes. Today this icon both represents a need for comforting items, and when I want to brag about my latest stitching experiment.

Keywords: Bordertown, fiction

Amazingly, before I ever even realized it, a novel set in Bordertown was my first introduction to Urban Fantasy. Fanfics, in my opinion at that time, did not count. The book was called Finder, not to be confused with the excellent comic series by Carla Speed McNeil of the same name. What blew me away in the first few chapters was the fact that this place operated with both magic, and craftsmenship. The papermiller's scene and lines just got me by the little grey cells and haven't really let go since then. When I heard that a NEW series was coming out, I was elated and this icon was one of the freebies from the website. Earlier this summer I got to meet the artist behind this icon and a few of the authors!

Keyword: Voip?, brainfart, derp
Description: Scribbled wacom color cartoon with the handwritten word bubble of 'voip?'

There are times when there are no thoughts in my head what so ever and this was, I'm told, an accurate depiction of the face I get for the 'whahuh?' experience. I loose my marbles often, and it's no surprise to anyone now that some of them are ball bearings, golfballs, turtle eggs, or little pearls. I had to find replacements somewhere.

Keyword: bento
description: a blue bento box lined with green lettuce contains an umeboshi stuffed riceball, fried purple potato and carrot stars with two pieces of tonkatsu in the back of the box, edged by two tiny chopsticks. The words "Bento: Japanese for Tiny CRACK" are above the photo.

I confess, after getting into anime i got into another expensive addiction. Making cute lunchboxes. I have a rather nice collection of mid-range bento boxes and accessories which as of late, haven't gotten much use. I used to photograph my boxed lunches whenever I could but as of late I haven't been making them as often. Most of the gallery still lies over in LJland, but sometime soon i hope to start posting photos of the cute food experiences again. This icon was painstakingly created with the polygonal lasso tool in photoshop, back when I had a working copy in a working computer.

from [personal profile] leeshajoy

Comment to this post, and I will list seven things I want you to talk about. They might make sense or they might be totally random.

Then post that list, with your commentary, to your journal. Other people can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

1. Seen any really ridiculous bento boxes lately?

Ridiculous food combinations or ridiculously cute? Aw heck, I'll hit both up. Recently the most ridiculous bento I saw recently was at the college campus and it was something that looked like either beef curry or leftover chow mein poured over frosted cupcakes. I really didn't have the heart or stomach to ask if this was 'what was left in the fridge', 'what I could afford' or even the least likely what they wanted for lunch. In fact now I ponder if this meal was a dare.

This is the current winner for most ridiculously cute bento. I haven't been much up on the fan bentos so I'm really going to need to check up on Anna the Red and get back to photographing mine. I should do another fan bento one of these days.

Oh and the most ridiculous-to-prepare bento award goes to miniature miso-pork cabbage rolls.

2. If you could change one thing about your life that is currently beyond your control, what would it be?

...dude, I would change the fact that Mom got the shitty genetic lottery and got the genes for Alpha-1 Antitripsyn disorder, because that would solve her breathing issues, her work issues, and the fact that she's struggling with tissue rejection issues over the lung transplant. all of these things just make me wanna run the clock back and hide under the stairs so much.

3. How did you get into PS238?

There's two murky recollected version to how I started reading the comic...One was that I started with the #0 issue freebie that went into a Dork Storm Press Free Comic, and the other was that I saw the cover for #7 at Dragon*con and picked it up to look at it and was immediately charmed by a comic book that appealed to both ages, was sensibly done and just plain sweet. I bought the first and second TPB the following Dec, right on the after-christmas sales and I've really enjoyed it since then. I dare you not to become charmed by Julie, or Suzie, or Tyler.

4. Favorite mythological creature and why?

Shahadavar. What is this? Well it's the Persian variation of the unicorn. A single horned beast resembling the Eland, with a long feline tail, and that hunted for food with it's horn. That's right, we've got a CARNIVOROUS UNICORN HERE. This bad boy wasn't a stalker though, it'd pick a high rocky spiny slope and point his head into the wind to hunt. See it's horn was riddled with holes that made the air whistle and moan through, like the most enchanting flute music you'd ever hear, and the prey, human and bird alike would be lured into range and then...well after that it'd be all over between the teeth of the Shahadavar and the landscape.

5. *Least* favorite mythological creature and why?

...you even have to ask? VAMPIRES. VAMPIRES BY EIGHTY FUCKING MILES. Seriously, it ticks me off enough that people have glamor-sexualized up and interbred the fuck-ugly Incubi and the zombie to create this fake thing in the media. Here's a fun fact, VAMPIRES DIDN'T DIE WITH THE STAKES. THOSE THINGS JUST KEPT THEM IN THE GROUND.

6. Hit "Shuffle" on your MP3 player of choice. Whatever the third song is, write about when and how you first heard it.

Always with me- Spirited Away soundtrack. I first heard this when my brother finally got his head into gear and let me pick out movies for my birthday gift. I picked up Spirited Away and Kiki's delivery service. You've got a wild guess as to what I watched the SHIT out of for the next few months. It was just...yeah, the summer just before I started working in the Bistro so 2005.

7. What *about* tempura shrimp?

This is the hardest thing for me to get into my lunchbox or find the supplies for. It's dead common to see depicted in manga and popular japanese bento boxes and books about bento boxes and it's mildly frustrating that I have such trouble with them. The closest I can come is the frozen tempura shrimp I get from wal-mart, but those don't come within radio contact of some of the good tempura shrimp I've had.

ganked from [livejournal.com profile] camwyn because it looked cool

step 1: put your music player on shuffle.
step 2: post the first line from the first 15 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing.
step 2a: Skip any instrumentals and songs where the first line is or contains the title.
step 2b: Also where the song is in a foreign language which you can't actually understand well enough to transcribe.
step 3: strike out the songs when someone guesses both artist and track correctly.
step 4: looking them up on google or any other search engine is CHEATING!
step 5: if you like the game, post your own.

A random moment of a possible...request?

A surprise for a pregnant friend I'm going to make a textured teething fabric book for her inbound daughter.

Which is basically me using a LOT of natural cotton embroidery floss and denim.

However, I'd like to do something a little different each page. Stimulate the kidlet's senses a bit.

SO.

Friendlist. Go here and select 3 stitches for one page, with a one-word item theme for the image that'll be built out of the stitches.(example: reverse chain, long-arm cross-stitch, boullion worm. Keyword: Hat 'This is Cricket's Hat'). I'd like to get about 8-10 pages. Who knows, maybe more.

The object of this exercise is to both make a great cloth book for a kid, and for ME to get a little extra motivation to learn some new stitches for my own bag of tricks.

HAVE AT INTERNET.

Sidenote: Running stitch and backstitches will be used to make borders for some parts and the lettering.

If I was a month, I’d be August.
If I was a day of the week, I’d be Saturday.
If I was a time of day, 4am, with no one else stirring about.
If I was a planet, I’d be Uranus.
If I was a sea animal, I’d be an octopus.

If I was a direction, I’d be West.
If I was a piece of furniture, I'd be the corner couch where pillows go to die.
If I was a liquid, I’d be the murky, blooming, vibrant swamp.
If I was a gemstone, I’d be rainbow moonstone.
If I was a tree, I’d be a juniper.

If I was a tool, I would be a pair of pliers.
If I was a flower, I’d be bindweed, the wild morning glory.
If I was a kind of weather, I’d be morning fog.
If I was a musical instrument, I’d be a bass violin.
If I was a color, I’d be sap green.

If I was an emotion, I’d be repose.
If I was a fruit, I’d be a raspberry.
If I was a sound, I’d be jangle of keys and scraps.
If I was an element, I'd be Water.
If I was a car, I’d be something small and sturdy.

If I was a food, I’d be a wildflower salad with berries and bleu cheese.
If I was a place, I’d be the best chair in the library.

Your result for The Steampunk Style Test...

The Ragamuffin

29% Elegant, 21% Technological, 43% Historical, 32% Adventurous and 71% Playful!

You are the Ragamuffin, the embodiment of steampunk playfulness. Chances are, you approach the genre from a much more casual and lighthearted standpoint than most other fans. To you, there is always an element of play inherent in the genre, and you may very well enjoy fashion as much for the opportunity to dress up as for the style itself. You probably wear goggles as an accessory, and rarely as actual eye-protection. Your outfits are likely to incorporate a lot of brown or cream, and combine large boots, Victorian corsets or vests, aviator caps or bowler hats, and gypsy skirts or slacks, simply because you like them all.
