I need to find if there's an app equivalent to Shazam, but for birdsong. It's kind of tricky trying to determine what the hell species I heard singing in the morning when I cannot actually give any details about the bird's appearance. The whatbird.com step by step search helped narrow things down a bit, but it's still a case of 'am I hearing the same things that the people who wrote the official description of this or that bird's song heard?'.

(Long story short, if the sample song bits in the Merlin bird identification app are right, it was a white-throated sparrow. Which means that even if I had seen it I would not have been closer to identifying it, because I don't walk around with binoculars in the morning and would not have been able to pick out specific details separating it from any other sparrows or female editions of the local finches or even the kinglets that I've seen once or twice around here. there is not currently a search category for 'little brown bird' on the identification apps I use.)

I think "Summing in the City" needs to sit in the pressure cooker for a bit, so I am taking up a new story to keep writing. So far it's called A Goblin Adventure and I am loving poor Dyn, my teen goblin who's just been paid a gold coin to clear out of his abusive job in the city so some mercenaries can stage an ambush.

Other things...
Jane Foster + Loki is a squiky ship to me, regardless of if it's MCU or comics. I know MCU Loki hasn't done as much direct harm to Jane, but it still creeps me out and there is a very vocal shipper in the Tumblr tags.

Which has inspired me to cut all my tracked tags, except for "Tamen De Gushi" (this is more a book mark so I remember to read the manga). Taking a break, and seeing how my Tumblr feed will react.

I was in New York City yesterday, coming home from visiting my parents for Easter (I try not to mention my travel plans online if I can avoid it, as a means of preventing opportunistic property crimes in my absence). Walked from Penn Station over to 6th Ave and then up to 53rd Street to catch the bus.

Three cross streets in a row had food booths selling halal street food. I was kind of amused at the number of attempts to capitalize on the same general name:

The Original Halal Guys
The Halal Guys
The Real Halal Guys

NYC being NYC, it's only a matter of time before Seriously Fucking Halal Guys shows up in Manhattan somewhere.

New goals: To play a game on my phone of tablet, I must first write for 15 minutes.

The games are taking a lot of my time and drive, so hopefully this will work. I already did 15 so I'm hopeful.

Oh man, the Magicians season final. I am curious to see if they can get another season after that.

Also, damn but War of the Realms is trying to suck me in. Marvel finally got a cross over event right, imho. A villain is making a power grab and no heroes fighting heroes! Though I am displeased with the first well know hero to fall. At this point I am just going ot collect the main title and not bother with the tie ins, even if they do include characters from Champions. I just don't have the cash for 5-6 titles a week.

Writing is just not happening and it is getting frustrating. I just tried to sit and write for 15 minutes and could get past the second sentence. I'm beginning to wonder if I need to set aside my story and do fanfic or something. Mix things up.

I also realizing I need to establish the habit of writing, more than I did before. Now that I am on a medication that stabilizes my mood and lifts me from the dreaded depressions I sit in, writing and other creative things aren't the lifeline giving me little jolts of joy. Which means I don't reach for them to lift my mood like I used to do. So now I need to figure out how to write are writing itself and not cheap therapy.

Fun times. I really need to try writing first thing in the morning or as near to it as I can. At the end of the day my creative spoons seem spent, so that's not working.

I should also tag out. Maybe that will knock words loose.

I'm really enjoying Ashes of the Tyrant, book five of the Brimstone Angel series. Some great world building in the form of a non human races culture. Also I am loving the characters so much, as I've said before. I'm getting tempted to do a reread once I get book six, which is the end of the series. I'm also struck all over again how interesting one of main characters, Farideh, could be to play. The challenge, at least as far as icons go, is I'd only have book covers for official depictions of her, which is hit or miss tbh. Nothing wrong with the art, but the expressions are very dramatic, given it's the book covers, and very limited. I do have a few fancast ideas, but I'd need to photoshop in some horns as Farideh is a tiefling. If my drawing skills we up to snuff, i could just draw icons as I need them, but drawing isn't working for me either.

Help me Carry Fisher, you're my only hope.

Watched Avatar: The Last Airbender last night, two episodes.

"The Headband" was fine. Footloose in the Fire Nation, basically. Nice animation, good music, nice strategic use of anime facial conventions.

"The Painted Lady", though... um.

By the end of it I had the impression that Joshua Hamilton, the credited writer, had gotten very drunk, watched Princess Mononoke, and announced, "Miyazaki's a hack! I could do this plot in twenty-two minutes!", and they held him to it.

Wow, that was a crappy episode.

Good adulting day

I think I found a good doctor and have all my prescriptions refilled. One big adulting thing that I’ve been trying to do for a while done.

Thankfully the doctor wasn't too awful about how long its been since I had a primary care doctor but quickly understood what I needed. I ended up being a little emotional about my sister which kind of smoothed things out. I always worry about a doctor making me feel bad for not getting myself taken care of, even though I've had few doctors who actually did. Since my biggest medical stuff is asthma and allergy, I've always been much better about getting to specialists than having a primary care doctor.

The only annoying part was my pharmacy didn't have one of my inhalers so I had to walk to another one to get it, but now I'm settled.

Work looks like its going to keep me busy until my week off, which in some ways is good, but its prepping stuff for summer and next year and that still feels weird.

I have a new prizewinner for People Are Looking For That:

An MBTA Police arrest report and a probation record transcript.

I have no idea if this person actually *is* looking for this, or if they are the kind of person who says '$%@$@ the police' in a moment of bad judgment and drops their stuff, but this is going back to the first MBTA police office I see. And if I don't see one soon enough for my liking I'll mail it to the home address on the forms.

But geez, this was on the sidewalk outside a T station. If you're discarding documents, use a trash can, and if you're not, then be more careful.

Darran just wants to study demonology and make a life for himself in the big city, away from the overbearing influence of his uncle and the demands of the family business. He gets what he wants, and even makes a friend in the only other person studying a restricted subject (necromancy in her case). Things are going great until they discover someone in the city is savaging dead spirits, for which Darran becomes a person of interest by the police, as well as putting his field of study in danger of being revoked.

And if that weren’t enough, he’s developing strong feelings for his necromanctic friend, feelings that would screw up their friendship considering she’s a lesbian. Who would have ever thought balancing the suspicions of the police, academic politics, and stopping the attacks on the city’s dead would be the least of his worries as he tries desperately to sort his feelings without screwing up his friendship.
